Enjoy!

"y'all ever heard of the bonobo apes?
yeah, you have?
(someone yells 'chimpanzees')
they're not chimpanzees
they look kind of like them, but they're not chimpanzees
that's what they thought they were - chimpanzees
until they noticed that they had really big penises and vaginas

and then..then they figured out..they were watching them....
'cause you know chimpanzees are a very rough bunch
they're not like the cute little chimps that you see on tv,
they will kick your ass.

and you know...they are kind of like us...
they are really smart, but they don't talk...
but they will kick your ass...which is kind of like us...

but, the bonobo apes...
they got a much better method of reconciliation....
figuring...you know how to work out things...
like, if you were a bonobo ape
and i was a bonobo ape, young lady,
then if we had an argument,
then to work it out
we'd hook up in a real big way...

but it's not only that way...
it's like two women, two female bobobo apes

(guys in audience start yelling)

i'm really sorry to inform you guys,
but the guys work it out that way, too

so, i'm real sorry...

but anyway, anyway..it's kinda...i just think its really interesting
that they've got these oversized genitalia
they get a little argument and they just rub
they call it gg rubbing
they call it gg rubbing, you see...
they get together and they just wipe that stuff together

there's a couple...they also...
they also, i've seen a couple documentaries on them...
and they also...
they also like to fiddle with their bits and pieces
they figured out that masturbation is a good thing...

so, they got that going for them, too

but there's this one..there's this...
i was watching this documentary
and there's this one bonobo ape
and he's standing on top of a log
he's got a banana
and a big hard on
he's just standing there
and he's like...
he's the king of the world
cause he's got a banana
so he's psyched, you know

then this female bonobo goes to him...
she thought
i want the banana!

so, she went over
and she serviced him.

and he gave her the banana...

i just think we could resolve so many things, you know
if we just did that
just picture some heads of state...
like george bush and bill clinton and, and...saddam hussein...
all gg rubbing up and down
we could work this out, you know...

yeah...
it was just an idea, you know.
get rid of road rage, you know...
get rid of highway killings...

YOU STOLE MY PARKING SPACE!

Even though last year was brutal and we said we'd never go back, we did (much to Elizabeth's dismay). The show was great and the trip was great too, minus a small little parking glitch. We got to hear The Last Stop for the first time ever, and I stood about five feet away from Dave and took some awesome pictures. There was also a kickass fight between some people in our section and some security guards during "Can't Stop." It was awesome! I seriously can't wait to go back.

Dave Matthews talking about wanting to be Tony Robbins while introducing David Gray.

Setlist:

Everyday
Pantala Naga Pampa
Rapunzel
Say Goodbye
When the World Ends
So Much to Say
Too Much
Sleep to Dream Her
Break Free
Lie in Our Graves (Bela Fleck)
Last Stop
Can't Stop
Crush
Jimi Thing (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones)
Louisiana Bayou

---------------------------------

Steady as We Go
Tripping Billies

My Gripe With Hippies

Typically when the summer rolls around, I begin attending quite a few concerts. Each year seems to bring some Dave Matthews Band, along with various other artists that change from year to year. I try to make it my unofficial policy to see at least one new act each summer, and this year I've certainly done so. Earlier this month I was treated to not one but two concerts put on by artists who I had never seen before: Ani DiFranco and the Indigo Girls. Yes, it seems that I've had a bit of a lesbian concert summer, but these artists, who I like and respect very much, have got me thinking.

The audiences at both shows were very similar. While the DiFranco show in Central Park had a smaller crowd than the Indigo Girls show at Wolf Trap in Northern Virginia, essentially the same fans attended both shows. The audiences at both concerts were at least 85 percent female, which didn't bother me one bit. A good portion of these women were also decked out in hippie garb, and as I watched the interactions of these "hippies," I realized how much they bother me.

You see, when most people think of the term "hippie," an image comes to mind of a person or a group of people, each with long hair, peace pendants and tye-dye shirts protesting the continuance of the Vietnam War. A noble cause indeed, as that war was certainly unnecessary, and that is what we picture. But nowadays, with these pseudo, fake hippies, we see nothing of the like. We see people, like those at these concerts, who dress the way the 1960s hippies dressed, but that is the extent to which they are similar to their predecessors. They call themselves hippies, and wrongfully so, for they do nothing more than sit on their asses and smoke maarijuana. They are lazy, and they are giving those from the 60s and the youth of today a bad name. They have taken this amazing concept of young people who care about peace throughout the world and turned it into something terrible.

I think some would be quick to jump to the defense of these new hippies and say today is a different day and a different world. Surely it is, I would be more than willing to concede that, but there are disturbing similarities between thirty years ago and today, not the least of which includes international conflict. These hippies today could be doing so much to advance their peaceful ideals, but they would all just rather steal the fashion sense and mentality of those who came before them and abandon the responsibility they have to the peace movement. They are a disgrace to the name and should not be identifying themselves as hippies. They are slackers, and it's about time we start calling them just that.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Note that they have given their lives for their country, not merely its flag.

You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest.

This amendment has nothing to do with honoring our soldiers at all. If we want to honor them, we should bring them home, not write into the Constitution that burning a flag is a crime.

Several other members of the Senate have spun the issue in different ways.

From the Senate floor on June 26, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) compared flag desecration to libel and child pornography, forms of expression he said have no "social value."

"Flag burning is a form of expression that is spiteful or vengeful," the five-term senator said. "It is designed to hurt. It is not designed to persuade."
Fortunately Democrats recognize that the issue is one of free speech and expression and not of anything else.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) sided with the 1989 Supreme Court decision, which voted 5-4 in Texas v. Johnson that flag burning was a political statement and that state laws banning it were unconstitutional.

The First Amendment was designed precisely to protect this sort of expression, Leahy said in a June 28 CNN article.

"The First Amendment never needs defending when it comes to popular speech," Leahy said. I returned from State College yesterday after a week of drunken gallivanting with some Collegian kids. Definitely good but bittersweet times. Congrats to the newest round of Penn State grads ... it won't be the same without you guys.

But onto more "blog worthy" things. Today's topic: polygamy (http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/05/06/wanted.polygamist.ap/index.html). Can't say I'm a huge fan of it in general, but in the grand scheme of things, is it really the worst thing ever? I doubt it. As long as those involved are of age and consenting, perhaps law enforcement officials should go after harder criminals. I realize Jeffs is accused of marrying young children into these sects, and for that he should be pursued and punished. But it seems this is an excuse to exploit everyone involved.

What bothers me the most is the attention CNN has paid to this topic. Every time I turn around I see another special on the network about Jeffs and polygamy. CNN has used the developments in this case to "bring attention to this problem," but where is CNN and where are these specials when serial killers are on the run?

I also don't claim to know a whole lot about Mormonism, but it does seem as though those who practice it are getting a bad rap. Most people blindly assume all Mormons are polygamists, which certainly isn't true. While I do not support Mormon practices or a lot of the views of LDS church members, such an assumption is ignorant.

Ah well. I suppose there are other things to be done today. Certainly there has to be a ball game on somewhere. I'll update more in the coming days, I promise.

May Day ... CORRECTION

I found this in Liz's blog and kinda liked it. Here ya go, folks.

A list of "Six Thing You Must Know About Me":

1. I have seen every episode of Friends at least five times. I quote the show ... a lot. It can get annoying, but I really can't stop.

2. I despise doing laundry. I'm really not sure why, it's just a pain in the ass to me.

3. I can say the alphabet backwards and am working on learning how to do the Rubik's Cube.

4. A lot of people assume, for whatever reason, that I rely on my parents, specifically my mom, to do everything for me. Although my mom still does a lot for me as a 22 year old, I am pretty self-sufficient.

5. I am secretly in LOVE with old school Madonna and rock out to The Immaculate Collection at every chance I get. "Borderline" for life!!

6. Going along with Liz's theme for the last one, I want to learn Spanish. I just wish I were better at it. (Sorry for those of you who saw the first version of this blog. I read Liz's wrong and thought she wanted to learn Irish for Rachel. Let me tell you, as an EXTREMELY talkative person, this experience nearly killed me. Technically I did not stay silent for the entire day because my ridiculous Spanish professor called on me to read something in class. I couldn't say no because I need the points and he doesn't speak English well, so I knew he wouldn't understand. But I did not speak English at all for the eight hours. At first it was difficult, but then I adjusted. As sad as that sounds, I got used to being forced not to talk. And the day certainly provided me with the opportunity to reflect on the various forms of oppression in our society. Basically if you're not a straight, white man, you're screwed. And that got me thinking because I have a lot of straight, white male friends. Throughout the day I ran into a couple of them and I wondered if it ever becomes apparent to any of them how great they have it. I also wondered if any of them will actually use that power to positively promote social change. Hopefully they will, but I doubt it. Why give up something so good to help others? I guess maybe I'm just jaded. Or maybe I'm just a realist, who knows.

But onto more superficial things. By about hour six I had become adjusted to having to talk with my hands but my mouth and throat were aching, I suppose from lack of use. I also had a headache, which I attributed to all the words I would have said just hanging out in my head. I don't know, it made sense. In the end I'm glad I did it, even if I didn't change a damn thing. At least I took a stand. And as a wise person once said, if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything...

Day of Silence...

Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the PSU Day of Silence, a movement to protest the silence faced by people in minority or oppressed groups, because of their age, sex, sexual/affectional orientation, sexual/gender identity, gender, size, race, ethnicity, victimization/survival of violence or sexual assault, physical, mental and/or emotional disability, physical and mental health, socioeconomic class, moral, political, ethical, religious/spiritual beliefs or lack thereof. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

Today I will be participating in the Day of Silence. I think it is a very worthy cause and I hope it brings a lot of attention to various social injustices. There are a lot of things going on throughout the day, so try to stop by one or two.

Throughout the day:
We will have a few tables on the ground floor of the HUB all day with board games, a scrapbook to express your thoughts, feelings, & experiences, and materials to make your own posters for the march and demonstrations. Come hang out with us on your down time and enjoy the comfort of being surrounded by others taking the pledge. We encourage everyone to attend as many events throughout the day as possible. Even those of you who, for whatever reason, cannot take the pledge with us, show your support by joining us in any of the many events throughout the day.

Minute-to-Minute Events:
9:50 – Meet at bottom of stairs in HUB for the countdown to silence
10:00 – Pledge of silence begins
11:30 – Gather in front of HUB (on Pollock) for the silent march
11:45 – Step off on silent march down Pollock toward west campus
1:00-1:30 – Silent Demonstration at Old Main
3:00-3:30 – Silent Demonstration at IST patio
4:00-5:00 – Silent Demonstration outside Palmer Art Museum
5:45-6:00 – Head to Kern Building for Evening Celebration!
6:00-8:00 – EVENING CELEBRATION (Kern Lobby)

Silent March:
This year we are having a silent march! Here's hoping...

I think right now I'm going to say the Mets are going to go all the way. Yea, they're my pick this year. Enjoy...

I understand that scissors can beat paper, and I get how rock can beat scissors, but there's no fucking way paper can beat rock.

Paper is supposed to magically "wrap around" rock, leaving it immobile? Why the hell can't paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can't paper do this to people? Why aren't sheets of college-ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they attempt to take notes in class?

I'll tell you why, because paper can't beat anyone. A rock would tear that shit up in about two seconds. When I play Rock/Paper/Scissors, I always choose rock. Then when someone claims to have beaten me with their paper, I can punch them in the face with my already clenched fist and say "Oh shit, I'm sorry ... I thought paper would protect you, asshole."

And a random music quote because each entry has to have some kind of musical reference:

Hello, how are you doing today?
I hope I find you feeling healthy
I'm so glad our paths crossed this time today
On our way into the night

We find love hiding here in the shadows in the darkness
maybe, it's up to you and I to bring to the night
Love as I approach the tears they fall like rain you tell me
Baby your hearts into a thousand pieces

Now stop only old and wise, with clouded eyes,
You can't see what I can't hide
Blindly throw my faith to the face
Of the next pretty girl that comes my way

Leave the name of the song and band/singer in a comment and win a prize that has yet to be determined. :)

Cozumel, Mexico. Each time I hear someone use this ridiculous expression, it takes all I have not to lash out at them. Now I wouldn't be lashing out in anger ... that really isn't my style. But I'd be lashing out in ignorance. What does this saying mean? Why do people say it? What do they mean? Honestly, I don't even think people who say it know what it means.

Like pretty much everyone else, I used to say "that's so gay" a lot of the time too. I said it, that is, until someone called me out on it. I was stunned. What did it mean, they asked. Well, I didn't really know. I knew that most use it to mean "that's so stupid," but then when did being gay equate to being stupid? Most of the gay people I know are smarter than most of the straight people I know, so that can't be right. If we're talking in terms of literal definitions, do we really mean to say, "that's so men who sleep with men!" I don't think that could make any less sense. What the hell are we saying by saying that? So what if we change it up a little bit and use some other words. Would we ever say, "that's so straight," "that's so black," or "that's so German?" If not, then why are we saying "that's so gay?" I mean it's all relative, right?

So it's not out of rage that I ask the question, but out of sheer curiosity. I'm sure that there is a chance I might actually start using this phrase again if someone can actually give me a logical answer as to what it means. But until then, when you say "that's so gay," watch out for my wrath.

Boston

Just wanted to show off my new skills (thanks Liz).

Can you hear the dolphin's cry?

Not too much to update. I don't really have too much to say, but I've been getting some feedback about this thing from the fans and I wanted to please them.

However I have not gotten feedback on the whole Mac issue. Still kinda in need of that, but I'm a little more adjusted now so it's ok. Life is going well, kinda. I'm really really busy and way tired all the time, but I'm doing well in school and somewhat in life, so that's good. I was dealt a setback this morning, something very traumatic actually. My mom said she won't pay for Semester at Sea. Damn her. Now I need to solicit $20,000 from other people or adandon the trip all together. I'd say both are equally likely. Leave feedback. This could be an amazing trip but a huge financial setback. But enough about me, let's talking about things that matter.

I read a New York Times article over the weekend discussing a recent television trend ... killing off lead characters. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have read it had it not included the mug of one Erin Daniels (the late Dana on Showtime's The L Word) but nevertheless I read it. And as I did, I thought about how shitty it was that Dana lost her life to cancer. I mean, this is television, it's essentially a fairytale, right? But then I got to thinking about how I've always said I wish television were more like real life, because it seldom is. So now here I am, part of me is glad that television is becomming more real, and part of me wants Dana back. Come on now, she was hot. But I guess we're all in love with reality t.v., and the more real something can be, the better. As if we don't get enough of a reality kick in the ass everyday of our lives. Ah well, at least there's still Carmen.

Alright I'm off to finish this kickass column, which will certainly piss off more than a few people on Friday, so check that out! Buenos noches!!

The Forbidden Fruit

Hello all. Sorry it has been quite a while since my last post (nearly a month if you want to get technical) but I've been busy with this life thing. To make a long story short, I'm in the middle of switching computers which is such a pain in the ass. I suppose it would be a lot easier if I were just switching computers, but I have also decided to switch platforms, which is an even BIGGER pain in the ass. Hopefully one day I will realize all of my efforts were worth it, but until then, living in limbo between the PC and Mac world isn't too fun.

Ah yes, the spring break. It was a couple of weeks ago and a smashing good time. Boston/Cambridge/Harvard was to die for, as always. If I can ever figure out how to post pictures in here, maybe you will get to see (hint hint to all the people out there who do know how to do that, drop me a line). After returning home from that excursion, Baltimore was nice and relaxing. The weather was surprisingly nice and the beer was free-flowing. Oh the joys of being young and legal.

But now I'm back to the real world and hating every minute of it. I reckon it's calling me now, so off to the office I go. Please do leave those comments about pictures, Macintoshs and anything else that may strike your fancy. They're a hoot to read.

On Saturday...

So I think I know why I'm not yet completely comfortable with this whole blog thing -- I've been taking it too seriously. I've been thinking of it more as something that needs to be deep and profound rather than a quick but interesting read. Hopefully now I'll be able to write some good, light-hearted blogs.

On that note, the weekend was spectacular. Got out of State College for the second weekend in a row and ventured down to the good ol' Maryland/D.C./Virginia area. While I enjoy weekends here, I've also had a lot of fun away from this place the past two weekends. I think this weekend was especially fun because I had really never taken the time to appreciate the positive side of the hustle and bustle of D.C. life. I live just a hop, skip and a jump away from the D.C. metro area, and make the occasional visit for a concert, but I've never really done more than that. Now that I've moved away from the area and do not see it all the time I have a lot more respect for it. Such a pretentious area. How nice. But like I said, spectacular weekend ... minus the insane drink prices. Great to get away, see the Clarks, watch Weeds, spend time with friends and do absolutely no work. How relaxing.

But onto things that are not so spectacular ... banning abortion. The South Dakota state legislature is in the process of sending a bill on its way to Gov. Mike Rounds for his stamp of approval that would make performing an abortion a felony in the state. Why must this issue be challenged? And why is it likely that Roe will be overturned? So depressing. Who wants to move to Canada with me?

The New York Times article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/26/weekinreview/26davey.html

Life in the Fast Lane...

Sure to make you lose your mind...

I figured I'd ease into this thing with a pretty light-hearted post tonight. Nothing too deep, just some random stuff about that thing we call life.

So yea, not really sure where it's taking me. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure most couldn't care less about my life or anything going on in it, but I'm attempting to enlist the services of the common reader. It seems I am at a fork in the road if you will, and I'm really not sure which way to go. Part of me wants to do this little thing called law school. And by little I mean 40 hours a week of reading, $150,000 worth of debt and a lifetime of what many would consider to be hell. But recently part of me has really wanted to check out graduate school for sociology or political science or something like that. Two very different worlds but one major decision I need to be making, and soon.

I also need to decide where I would like to continue such post-graduate endeavors. Part of me has always wanted to live out west, specifically California, but do I really want to be that far away from my family and some good friends? I love it out there, but they are my family. I'm not really sure that I could experience anything like it on the East Coast, so which do I want more? Time with my family and long-time friends, or pursuit of some long-time goals.

So here I am, asking for some help from you, the reader. Leave a post, write a quick comment, drop me an IM. Do whatever you need to do, but I need some advice.

Not too much else really going on. I'm off to watch Sex and the City and kick back with some Yuengling. Who would've thought it?

Hi, I'm new

At the urging of many of the fans, I have decided to take on the blog world.
